The Neuroscience AOC will allow students to have a mixture of clinical and scholarly experiences in the neurosciences during their four-year attendance at UPSOM. A faculty mentor will individually design these experiences for each student. In addition to these individual experiences, there will be monthly meetings for all students participating in the program. Students also will have the opportunity to attend conferences both locally and nationally. Most importantly, this program will create a sense of “community” for our students interested in the neurosciences. This “community of scholars” will allow students to network with peers, faculty, and individuals here and at other institutions. |

Through the Neuroscience AOC, students will have the opportunity to participate in the long-term treatment of patients with disabling neurological and behavioral conditions. The student’s clinical interest will form the impetus for a scholarly project that will expose students to quality research efforts. Each student, under faculty supervision, will strive to meet the following goals.

Year 1
- Identification of a faculty mentor.
- Development of Contract for Clinical, Research and Scholarly Excellence with faculty mentor.
- Participation in clinical experiences relevant to the Scholar.
- Attendance at all group and annual activities.
- Construction of a portfolio to document his/her progress.
Between Year 1 & Year 2
- Opportunities for clinical and research activities within the neurosciences.
Year 2
- Monthly meetings with faculty mentor to assist with goals as outlined in Scholar’s Contract for Excellence.
- Identification of a scholarly area of interest.
- Continued participation in clinical experiences.
- Attendance at all group and annual activities.
- Review of portfolio and Contract for Excellence by AOC Director at beginning of academic year.
Year 3
- Quarterly meetings with faculty mentor to assist with goals as outlined in Scholar’s Contract for Clinical, Research and Scholarly Excellence.
- Initiation of scholarly project no later than October of junior year.
- Continued participation in clinical experiences.
- Attendance at all group and annual activities.
- Review of portfolio and Contract for Excellence by AOC Director.
Year 4
- Monthly meetings with faculty mentor to assist with goals as outlined in Scholar’s Contract for Excellence
- Continued work on scholarly project with completion of project no later than April of senior year.
- Continued participation in clinical experiences.
- Attendance at all group and annual activities.
- Review of portfolio by AOC Director.
- Presentation of research project at the Annual Poster Symposium for AOC participants (May).
- Awarding of AOC Certificate!
