EMSA Background
The EMERGENCY MEDICINE STUDENT ASSOCIATION was founded in 1992 to promote interest in the field of Emergency Medicine (EM) and to expose students to EM early in their careers. With these goals in mind, we are open to all medical students, not just those specifically interested in EM.
In pursuit of this goal, EMSA organized opportunities for first and second year medical students to shadow emergency physicians at Presbyterian University Hospital. This coming year the group hopes to expand the hospital shadowing to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Other EM related experiences include the chance to ride along in the physician emergency response jeep and flying along with the Stat-Medivac helicopter. Additionally, EMSA sponsors workshops in various areas such as: Blood drawing techniques; IV access; Airway control and intubation; Wound care including suturing of lacerations. Workshops are led by Dr. Stephanie Gonzalez, an attending physician at Presbyterian Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) with the help of residents and nurses from the Emergency Department. Another activity that was recently incorporated by EMSA was sponsoring a “Differential Diagnosis” series of lunchtime talks in which emergency medicine cases from the University Hospital are presented by an attending physician and discussed with students to expand their basic science knowledge into clinical medicine. Finally, at the end of the year EMSA coordinates a lunch or dinner where the fourth year medical students who have matched into emergency medicine residencies come to discuss their reasons for pursuing EM and the process of applying for residency. Please visit the EMSA booth during the Organization Fair during Orientation Week if you have questions.
