The AIG is here to provide a variety of ways for students to explore Anesthesiology as a career.  We are supported by our wonderful Anesthesiology Department to provide opportunities for mentorship, education, and hands-on experiences with the faculty and residents.

Pitt is one of the leading institutions in anesthesiology research. You can become involved in research ranging from anesthetic mechanisms to neurophysiology. Check out what is currently going on by visiting the research section of the Department website. If you are interested, you may e-mail the Department Chair, Dr. John P. Williams, e-mail one of the primary investigators, or one of the AIG officers for more information.
Anesthesiology Summer PreceptorshipUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
This is a work-study clinical rotation for medical students, up to eight (8) weeks, between the first and second year of med school. Responsibilities include anesthesia and operating room technical work as well as observation of and participation in the perioperative care of patients.

Once you have successfully completed the required Surgery & Perioperative Care Clerkship, there are a variety of electives – ranging from general anesthesiology to pain management - you can take in order to gain more exposure to the field. Questions may be directed to Michael Mangione, MD, Director of the Department’s Medical Student Programs.
